First Photos

Hello, Family!

It's slightly easier to share things with you blog-style. Hopefully I'll have enough time to keep it up. But for now, here are some initial shots of the apartment! It's starting to finally feel like it's my place... now that we've got our own decorations up here and there. Lots of work still to do, though.

I got that tapestry for Fabi a long time ago. It just so happens to KIND OF match the green furniture. Not really, but let's just pretend, okay? haha!

You enter the bedroom from the living room, and that there is my giant wardrobe. No closets in this house. I miss my big closet so bad!

Our orange and red curtains... came with the place! As did many Catholic books from Fabi's late grandparents.

Got my tapestry up, too! We moved Fabi's bookshelf downstairs, and I've now placed photos of Mom and Lisa on it.

The garden needs a lot of work. The last renter didn't keep track of anything, so there's a large dead tree and it's all overgrown. But we'll get it all fixed up!

Up the Alps, Down a "Bier"

Hello, Family! So, here we go... the first round of Alps photos! This first one is our view the morning we left. A bus drove us from our hotel in the valley up to about the half-way mark altitude-wise. Lots of shade because the mountains are just so darn huge. This photo overlooks the "Lechtal" - the valley of the Lech River. This is a group photo of the adults we went with. There were 6 of us all together. Fabi and I are not featured in this lovely shot, but you can see Markus and Anja (friends of the family) and Margit and Hansi (the latter being his normal goofy self). Then we have my wonderful Julie Andrews impression. ... and some robustly healthy cows who let us walk right through their grazing space. How the cows made it up to that altitude eludes me, but they were there nontheless, bells a' ringing. Fabian strikes a Tirolan pose at the almost-top. 3rd Annual Alpine Hike

Representin' Sullivan, MO in the Alps This past weekend Fabian and I traveled to Austria with his mother for our third annual Alpine hike. We take a different trail (or trails) each year. This year we began at the Lünersee - a lake in Vorarlberg, Austria - at an altitude of 6,463 feet above sea level. We took a gondola from the parking lot up to the lake itself. The lake was dammed in the 1950s, raising the water level significantly. It has been producing hydroelectric power for the valley below ever since. On Saturday morning, we first walked along the edge of the lake for about 45 minutes, then we took a right and headed over the tree level and into the rocky, windy valley up towards the Swiss border. It began to rain, then snow-rain, then flat out snow on us while we fought our way to the Verajoch - our first ridge to hike over. Suddenly on the other side, the fog cleared and the sun shone! December Days

It's snowing! It's snowing! I'm quite enthusiastic about this winter wonderland. I haven't seen the likes of this in St. Louis for years! But the temperatures haven't been steady enough to keep it on the ground. We get snow or sleet in the morning, then the sun comes out and melts everything by afternoon. All the necessary preparations for the season are complete - filled up our antifreeze, salted the stairs to our door, put winter tires on the car, and decorated the apartment for Christmas. I'm having a hard time keeping the poinsetta alive, so I put decorations around my succulent instead. Work is going smoothly. I still don't have too many hours, but the 2 students I have are wonderful. Their names are Gretel and Brigitta (can you get more German-sounding?) and they are such sweet ladies! Today Brigitta gave me a hug at the end of class and said "English lessons, MANY fun!" Don't worry, we'll work on that grammar. I'm getting more ...
