Friendsgiving 2016

Fabi and I got home from Charly's 60th birthday party around 4:30 p.m., and we immediately shoved the bird in the oven. Around 5:00, all the guests had trickled in and I began delegating recipes. Jessi was in charge of the pumpkin pie, Jessi took care of the corn souffle, Silvi made the mashed potatoes and Fabi Joos made another fabulous sauce for he turkey! My Fabi was in charge of drinks - he whipped up caipirinas for everyone and stocked the fridge with beer. I myself was in charge of the bird and the brussels sprouts.

For the first time since we've been celebrating Thanksgiving together, I felt like we really had a rhythm and knew what we were doing. The cooking phase of the evening took us exactly the three hours that the bird spent roasting, and every single dish was complete and ready to eat at the same time. We shoved the pie in the oven and I began carving the bird...

A fabulous roast beast

We are thankful for good food and for our "Homies Thanksgiving" tradition!

We ate leftovers, drank wine, and stayed up visiting until 3:30 in the morning - the longest we've stayed awake at a Thanksgiving ever. I wonder if it had anything to do with the fresh turkey I ordered from the butcher... he was certainly strong at healthy and perhaps contained less tryptophan? Who knows!

Everyone found a comfy spot to crash - so comfortable that they didn't wake up and stumble down for breakfast until almost noon! Fabi and Fabi walked to the bakery and picked up some fresh rolls while the girls and I made coffee and tea and set the table.

On Sunday afternoon, we took a walk around Heilbronn. The weather was sunny and beautiful, with just a little bit of the fall colors left on the trees. Katja and I walked arm in arm and had a much needed heart-to-heart. We walked down the Neckar and through the city park, then looped back and walked through the construction of the Christmas Market. The builders were working at lighting speed and you could already see the first of the elaborate decorations that are always placed on the roofs of the little hut-like stands - owls, fake snow, a few reindeer.

Around 3:00, Katja and Fabi Joos took their train back to Göttingen and the rest of the troupe headed home as well.
